Lupe Buten

Lupe Buten M.S., CCC-SLP/TSSLD-BE
Owner, Speech-Language Pathologist

Hi! I’m Lupe, a licensed pediatric speech-language pathologist and the founder of Speak Through Play, Inc. I work with children and families throughout Westchester, NY and Connecticut, as well as virtually throughout NY and CT.

I have extensive experience supporting children with a variety of communication needs. My clinical focus includes speech sound disorders, pediatric myofunctional therapy, and early speech and language development. As a bilingual Spanish-English SLP, I have a particular interest in bilingual language development and supporting children who are growing up with more than one language.

​

I believe families should feel confident supporting all of their child's languages. I help families understand bilingual language development, recognize when additional support may be helpful, and create meaningful opportunities for children to communicate in everyday life.
 

As both a clinician and a mom of three, I understand how communication impacts everyday family life, from mealtimes and routines to learning, socializing, and emotional regulation. This perspective shapes the way I approach therapy. I believe children make meaningful progress when they feel comfortable, families feel supported, and therapy connects to real life.
 

My therapy style is warm, engaging, and evidence-based. I use play as a powerful tool to help children feel comfortable while building functional communication skills they can use at home, at school, and in their everyday lives.

Professional Background

My interest in bilingual communication began during my graduate studies, where my master's research focused on bilingual speech perception and listening. My thesis, Acceptable Noise Levels and Speech Recognition Measures in Bilingual Spanish-English Listeners, explored speech perception and listening in bilingual Spanish-English listeners.

I later co-authored a peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research examining the effects of speech signals, background babble, and listener language on acceptable noise levels.

​

My professional work has continued to focus on bilingual speech and language development. I have developed Spanish-language speech therapy resources for speech-language pathologists, including language, articulation and Cycles-based phonology materials, and provide parent education and professional learning related to bilingual language development and clinical practice.
